First meeting
The owners engaged us to come up with some ideas that would complement the 70’s façade of this home and offer a safe path to the front of the house. Due to health reasons, the driveway and front entry had become too hard for the owners to negotiate due to the slope and uneven levels.
While at this meeting the owners mentioned their love of some large silky oak trees that unfortunately had to be removed due to drainage issues and the continual mess they caused. With their reluctant removal looming, our designer suggested that it would be nice to somehow re-use the timber rather than see it wasted as mulch.
The owners were excited by this suggestion and from here the idea to recycle the timber into an art feature for their new front entry evolved.
Design concept: Two weeks later
We decided on an new driveway using exposed aggregate, but to add just a little flavour we designed it with Dark Granite Cobbles as a feature band, that would complement the Dark Grey Granite tiles that would be featured on the path.
The slabs of timber from the silky oaks were designed to stand on end with rods separating them to make them a form of artwork, with a linked history to the site. The pathway to the front deck was designed to meander through the garden, so that visitors could appreciate the timber slab features as they made their way to the front deck.
We even created a unique letterbox for the owners by using the timber slab off cuts.
