Luckily, a leaky showerhead is normally more of a nuisance than a serious problem; however, in some cases the leak can lead to water damage both in and around the shower itself. You may want to consider having your shower waterproofed. You really want to address any minor plumbing issues, like a leaky showerhead, as soon as possible.

Step One:

First, you want to find where the showerhead threads onto the water supply pipe. Tighten this fit as much as possible, but avoid over twisting as this causes the threading to become stripped. You may need to use a wrench, depending on the angle and your own strength. In many cases, this may be all that is necessary to fix that leaky showerhead. Turn on the water and test for leaks. If you are no longer seeing a leak, you have fixed your problem with just a few minutes work.

Unattended leaking showers may result in the need for a whole bathroom renovation

Step Two:

If the showerhead still leaks, you need to do a bit more work to fix the problem. Completely unscrew the showerhead from the pipe and clean both sets of threads. Using a utility brush or even an old toothbrush can help. Remove any residue that you see on either side of the threads. Rust or other debris can keep the showerhead from connecting properly to the plumbing, causing your leak.

TEFLON TAPE AND RUBBER WASHERS

Another option is using Teflon tape. After you make certain both sets of thread are clean and dry, wrap Teflon tape around the connecting thread in a clockwise direction. Reattach the showerhead until snug. Also, look inside the showerhead to see if there is a rubber washer. It could be that this rubber washer is rotted or broken. If this is the case, replace this before reattaching. You should be able to find additional washers at a local home improvement store, or you can order the exact size you need online.

Still leaking?

If you have tried all of these methods and still have a leak, it could be a defective showerhead piece or it could be something further down the plumbing. If you do not have extensive plumbing knowledge, you may have to call a professional to fix your leaky shower. A problem that is not easily fixed could be causing you serious issues, so you should go through with this step as soon as possible.

As you can see, the process of fixing a leaky showerhead may or may not be a difficult one. Taking care of the problem quickly is the most important thing you can do.
